AWSM Farming Ltd Harvest of Dreams
“It’s gone like a dream, I have dried more than ever and enjoyed doing it!” said Adam Metcalfe, Director of AWSM Farming Ltd. in North Yorkshire.
Why did it go like a dream? Because AWSM Farming had made the decision to overhaul their grain handling and control ahead of harvest 2024 using the combined skills of S&R Madden Agricultural Services & Steel Fabrications and Perry of Oakley Ltd.
AWSM Farming had an old grain intake conveyor that kept blocking and various other handling machines that were worn out by the volume of grain going through each harvest. On average it was rare the system would run continuously for more than ~ 4.5 hours without there being a problem forcing it to shutdown.
It was time to replace & upgrade. The aim was to achieve smooth running of the system to drive better efficiency. To do this they replaced the intake conveyor with a 60tph curved combination chain & flight conveyor with a 5.8m mechanical reception hopper. All the other handling was replaced with a mixture of horizontal store conveyors, inclined chain & flight conveyors and agricultural belt & bucket elevators. All the conveyors were upgraded to have 5mm bases to give them extra wear protection meaning they’ll last much longer.
The project then grew when AWSM Farming decided to install a new electrical control panel to automate the handling and also operate their existing Grain Dryer. Scott Madden liaised with the Perry technical department as well as the panel builder to ensure everything was covered, and to ensure compatibility with existing electrical contactors. This meant the cabinet was more cost effective to AWSM Farming. This approach demonstrated the technical knowledge and flexibility of the quoting process of S&R Madden and Perry of Oakley.
The electrical control system has been a great success with the plant and Dryer being integrated together, operated via a Perry 12” touch screen PLC. The operating program is written in-house by Perry of Oakley, which AWSM Farming have found to be a very simple system to operate.
During the project S&R Madden & Perry of Oakley have also upgraded the access to the machines, meaning maintenance is far easier. S & R Madden also worked on the existing Dryer to increase its performance.
Overall, AWSM Farming are delighted with the end result, and are already looking to expand upon the system for next year. Director, Adam Metcalfe, said “I would like to say a massive thank you for the work you have done. On the whole, it’s gone like a dream”.
